World's Biggest Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Facility Debuts at the Hands of China's Envision Energy

In the rapidly expanding global green hydrogen market, valued at around $8 billion in 2024 and projected to surge to approximately $300 billion by 2035, China's Envision Energy has made a significant stride with the launch of the world's largest green hydrogen and ammonia plant in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia.

This pioneering facility operates entirely off-grid, powered by renewable sources such as wind, solar, and advanced battery storage, eliminating carbon emissions from energy inputs. The plant's unique features include the production of 320,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year, aimed at starting exports by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in balancing energy supply and demand in real-time, dynamically optimising energy absorption and ammonia synthesis. The plant also utilises a novel approach, converting and storing surplus renewable energy as liquid nitrogen within an air-separation unit, ensuring system stability even when wind or solar input fluctuates.

Envision Energy's Chifeng plant exemplifies a new paradigm for sustainable, resilient, and economically viable green hydrogen systems worldwide. It establishes China as a global leader in green hydrogen, providing a scalable and practical model for green ammonia production essential for heavy industries and clean fuel transport.

The plant's approach supports large-scale decarbonization of industrial processes by replacing fossil fuel-based hydrogen and ammonia with low-carbon alternatives. By pioneering AI-driven energy management in a fully renewable off-grid context, it demonstrates a pathway towards a more sustainable energy future.

Envision Energy's ambitions extend beyond the Chifeng plant. The company aims for net-zero emissions by 2050 and became carbon neutral in 2022. To achieve this, it plans to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030, using 2020 as the baseline.

The company's focus on reducing Scope 3 emissions is also noteworthy. By engaging suppliers and improving product design throughout their lifecycle, Envision Energy is making strides in addressing the entire carbon footprint of its operations.

The global green hydrogen market is being driven by increasing demand for clean energy, decarbonization initiatives, and advancements in renewable energy and electrolysis technologies. Hydrogen could supply up to 24% of global energy demand by 2050, driven by falling costs and stronger policy support.

Ammonia, a key hydrogen carrier, makes storage and transport easier than pure hydrogen gas. Envision Energy's ammonia output is already the largest in the world and plans to grow to 1.5 million tonnes each year by 2028.

Other significant projects include the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, aiming to produce 1.2 million tonnes of ammonia annually and 600 tonnes of hydrogen per day. In Australia, the Australian Renewable Energy Hub plans to harness 26 GW of solar and wind for hydrogen and ammonia production.
