WhatsApp's Upcoming Username System: What We Know So Far
WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, has not yet introduced a fixed username system or a reservation system for usernames, unlike platforms such as Telegram or Discord. The app continues to function primarily through phone numbers rather than freely chosen, unique usernames.
Currently, WhatsApp links accounts to a phone number, not a user-defined username. There's no option to choose or reserve a unique username like '@yourname'. Users can set an optional profile name, but it's not unique and serves only for display in chats. WhatsApp has not officially announced any plans or tests for such a system. However, it's rumoured that WhatsApp, owned by Meta, may be working on a username feature similar to Instagram. If true, the company would likely announce it through official channels.
The introduction of usernames will reportedly happen in two stages due to a significant issue. First, a reservation system will be implemented to address the problem of early testers securing desirable usernames. Once a username is chosen, users will be able to define a user key, a four-digit PIN, to protect their privacy. Knowing just the username will not be enough to send a message; the user key will also be required. The reservation feature is expected to be faster to complete.
As of October 2025, WhatsApp does not offer a username system or a reservation system for usernames. If there are any developments, WhatsApp is likely to announce them officially. To stay informed, keep an eye on the official WhatsApp channels.
