WhatsApp administrators plan to adjust settings to combat misinformation, here's what that entails
In the industrial city of Indore, authorities are taking decisive action to curb the spread of fake news, inflammatory messages, and rumours on social media, which have been causing problems for government officials managing the coronavirus outbreak.
The latest move comes in the form of an order issued by Indore Collector Manish Singh on Monday, directing the administrators of all WhatsApp groups in the district to restrict posts from other members. This order is hoped to help in preventing the spread of misinformation on social media.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotia, only group administrators are now authorized to post messages on the platform. This change in group settings is in response to the order issued by Indore Collector Manish Singh.
The order was issued to address the issue of fake messages regarding covid that have been registered under the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act in two police station areas of the city. No specific details were provided about the number of cases registered or the nature of the fake messages.
However, it's known that three persons, including two WhatsApp group administrators, have been arrested in connection with the cases. The arrests were made in response to the spreading of false covid symptoms information on social media, which has led to unfortunate incidents such as the stone-pelting in Tatpatti Bakhal area and the injury of two women doctors during contact tracing of covid patients.
The total number of covid cases reported in Indore stands at 151, and unfortunately, 13 people have died from covid during treatment. The city's authorities are working tirelessly to combat the spread of the virus and the misinformation that accompanies it.
These measures are crucial in maintaining public safety and trust during these challenging times, as the city of Indore continues to battle the covid outbreak.
