Western Canada Receives Inaugural 400 kW Electric Vehicle Charging Station from On The Run
On The Run Opens Canada's Fastest Public EV Charging Station in Delta, B.C.
On The Run, a subsidiary of Parkland Corporation, has opened a new ultra-fast charging station in Delta, British Columbia. This charging station offers the fastest public charging speeds available in Western Canada, making it a significant step forward in the expansion of public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the region.
The station, located at 8579 120 Street, features a 400 kW charger, capable of delivering massive power for EVs that support high-speed charging. It includes three chargers: one A400 unit offering up to 400 kW, and two Terra 184 chargers rated at 180 kW each.
Although On The Run has not yet implemented the North American Charging Standard (NACS) at this location, they have announced plans to roll out support for NACS in 2024. In the meantime, the chargers primarily support the Combined Charging System (CCS) plug, which is the standard for most new electric vehicles sold in Canada, including GM, Ford, Volkswagen, and many others. Tesla vehicles can charge via CCS adapters if needed. Some stations may also support CHAdeMO for older models like the Nissan LEAF.
Tesla drivers must bring their own adapter to use On The Run's chargers, with charging speeds limited to a maximum of 50 kW with a CHAdeMO adapter or 250 kW with a CCS adapter.
To celebrate the opening of this new charging station, the Journie Rewards app is offering free charging sessions for a limited time. On The Run is also participating in an EV charging loyalty program, allowing users to earn and redeem points and discounts at On The Run Charging stations nationwide from Fall 2025 onward.
The expansion of On The Run's charging stations includes locations in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, and potentially other regions. This expansion is part of broader provincial and federal efforts to increase public EV charging infrastructure. Significant government funding is being deployed nationwide to facilitate installation of over 850 EV chargers, including ultra-fast ones, supported by Natural Resources Canada's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) and complementary initiatives.
These investments aim to increase availability of fast charging in urban areas, public spaces, workplaces, highway corridors, and multi-unit buildings, which are critical to EV adoption. The new charging stations are primarily located in urban and high-traffic areas to support broad accessibility.
In summary, On The Run ultra-fast charging stations are part of growing public EV infrastructure in Canada, enhanced by federal and provincial funding programs, with a focus on convenience and loyalty incentives. They offer high-power chargers compatible with major EV models, and can be found in convenient retail locations to support urban and highway charging needs.
