University Secures Additional Electric Buses for Campus Transportation
Ulm and Neu-Ulm Embrace Sustainable Public Transportation with New Electric Buses
In a significant step towards modernizing and greening public transportation, SWU Transportation GmbH (SWU Verkehr GmbH) has ordered 37 fully electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses from Daimler Buses. The order, placed on July 18, 2025, consists of 15 eCitaro solo buses and 22 eCitaro G articulated buses, designed to serve the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm.
The eCitaro buses are equipped with the latest-generation NMC4 lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries, offering a capacity of 111 kWh per pack. They support depot charging up to 300 kW through side sockets or roof-mounted pantographs for opportunity charging. The buses also boast enhanced accessibility, CO₂ air conditioning, and are integrated with Daimler’s Omniplus On Digital Services package for predictive maintenance.
The electric bus project kick-off was a momentous occasion, attracting high-ranking guests such as Till Oberwörder, CEO of Daimler Buses, Ralf Gummersbach, Managing Director of SWU Verkehr GmbH, Klaus Eder, CEO of Stadtwerke Ulm Neu-Ulm GmbH, Ulm's Mayor Martin Ansbacher, and Neu-Ulm's Mayor Katrin Albsteiger.
The order for these electric buses marks a commitment by SWU Transportation GmbH to expand sustainable public transportation in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. The buses are intended for use in both cities, contributing to a greener and more modern transportation system. The order includes an option for nine more electric buses from Daimler Buses, indicating a continued dedication to this cause.
This collaboration between SWU Transportation GmbH and Daimler Buses not only signifies a step forward in sustainable public transportation but also brings local economic benefits, as Daimler Buses is based in Neu-Ulm. The electric bus project kick-off was a testament to the cooperation and mutual benefits that can arise from such partnerships.
The order for the electric buses is part of SWU Transportation GmbH's broader strategy to promote modern and sustainable public transportation in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions and improving the quality of life for residents in both cities.
Technology plays a crucial role in the electric bus project, as the latest-generation NMC4 lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries power the eCitaro buses ordered by SWU Transportation GmbH. This technology, supported by Daimler's Omniplus On Digital Services package for predictive maintenance, aims to modernize and green the public transportation system in Ulm and Neu-Ulm.
The implementation of this technology-driven bus system is expected to boost the quality of life for residents in both cities by making public transportation more sustainable and modern.
