Uber Expands into Courier Business in Germany

Ride-hailing and food delivery service Uber is venturing into the transport of goods, with the launch of its new service "Uber Courier" across nine major German cities. The service, now available in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart, and Mannheim, was first launched in the UK last week.

Uber will leverage its existing network of delivery partners for this new service. The service providers, depending on the size and distance of the shipment, will use either a bicycle or a car. Each package must not weigh more than 20 kilograms individually but not exceed 60 kilograms in total, and should fit in the trunk of a mid-size car. The costs for "Uber Courier," like Uber rides, are displayed in the app beforehand, based on driving time and distance.

Christoph Weigler, Germany CEO of Uber, claims this new option is aimed at local small businesses, enabling them to quickly deliver ordered items to customers within cities.

The traditional taxi industry has long been critical of Uber due to its business models and working conditions at Uber partner companies. However, the Uber Courier service focuses on parcel delivery rather than passenger transport, which may limit direct competition with traditional taxi drivers. This expansion of Uber into logistics and local business parcel deliveries is expected to intensify competition in urban logistics and delivery services.

Uber's decision to expand into the courier business in Germany further broadens its operational scope beyond ride-hailing and food delivery, targeting local small businesses' last-mile delivery needs. Although there is expected competition in urban logistics and delivery services as a result, it is important to note that the traditional taxi market, which predominantly serves passenger transportation, remains distinct from Uber's newly introduced courier segment.

Uber's new courier service, "Uber Courier," targets local small businesses in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart, Mannheim, and the United Kingdom, potentially intensifying competition in urban logistics and delivery services. This expansion of Uber into the courier business utilizes bicycles and cars, with each package having specific weight and size restrictions. In contrast to the traditional taxi market, which primarily focuses on passenger transportation, Uber's courier segment primarily serves last-mile delivery needs.
