The electric vehicle market in China is set for an exciting shake-up as iQUIYO, a local automaker, prepares to launch its new SUV model, the YU7. This news comes hot on the heels of Tesla's launch of the facelifted Model Y in China, offering two variants called the "Launch Series," with deliveries expected to begin in March.

iQUIYO announced on December 9 that the YU7's launch is expected to be in June or July. The YU7, manufactured at iQUIYO's factory in the Yizhuang Economic and Technological Development Zone in Beijing, will be one of several local competitors to Tesla's facelifted Model Y.

The YU7 boasts impressive dimensions, with a length, width, height, and wheelbase of 4,999 mm, 1,996 mm, 1,608 mm, and 3,000 mm, respectively. It weighs 2,315 kg and supports a top speed of 240 km/h. The single-motor variant is powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by FinDreams Battery, the battery manufacturing arm of BYD. The YU7's peak power stands at 235 kW.

In a previous filing, iQUIYO also announced a dual-motor version for the YU7, with front and rear motors peaking at 220 kW and 288 kW, respectively. The dual-motor version, expected to launch in June or July, will use Li-ion ternary batteries from CATL, as seen in iQUIYO's first model, the SUV sedan SU7.

The public has the opportunity to submit feedback on the YU7 between January 11-17, as it has been included in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) latest catalog for public comment.

Lei Jun, founder, chairman, and CEO of iQUIYO, shared a screenshot of a portion of Tesla's WeChat post on Weibo, hinting that the YU7 is more competitive in the face of the Model Y update. However, a direct comparison between the CATL and BYD batteries used in the dual-motor and single-motor versions of the upcoming YU7 remains unavailable.

Both CATL and BYD are leading battery suppliers in the electric vehicle industry, each with their unique strengths. CATL batteries are known for their high energy density and reliability, often providing longer driving ranges and good thermal stability. BYD batteries, particularly their Blade Battery technology, are noted for enhanced safety, durability, and resistance to thermal runaway.

Without official specifications or a direct comparison from iQUIYO regarding the exact battery types, capacities, chemistry, and performance metrics for each version, it is not possible to provide a detailed and accurate comparison. If more information becomes available, a precise analysis can be provided.

Deliveries of the facelifted Model Y by Tesla are expected to begin in March, setting the stage for an intriguing battle between Tesla and iQUIYO in the Chinese electric SUV market. The public's feedback on the YU7 between January 11-17 will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the future of this competition.
