Toyota & Joby Showcase Electric Air Taxi at Osaka Expo
Toyota, the Japanese automaker, has invested heavily in Joby Aviation, a US-based electric air taxi company. Together with ANA Holdings, they've showcased an electric air taxi at the World Expo in Osaka, aiming to revolutionise urban air mobility in Japan.
The aircraft, designed to carry one pilot and up to four passengers, can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h. It demonstrated its capabilities at the Expo, performing vertical takeoffs, winged flight, and vertical landings. The companies plan to conduct over 20 more flights in the next 13 days to familiarise the public with the technology and gather data for integration into Japanese airspace.
In collaboration with the Japanese aviation authority, Joby and ANA are working to establish regulatory paths for this new technology. Their long-term goal is to build a national air taxi network, starting with the bustling city of Tokyo.
Toyota's investment in Joby, along with ANA's partnership, signals a significant step towards commercialising electric air taxis in Japan. The successful demonstration at the World Expo and planned flights indicate a promising future for urban air mobility in the country.
