May 29, 2025 - Where Tech Meets Tone: SSL BiG SiX at SUPERBOOTH25

Berlin, Germany, played host to a cacophony of auditory delights in May, as the pulsing heart of synthesizer culture shuddered to life at the SUPERBOOTH25. Amongst the myriad of innovative new products on display, several Solid State Logic BiG SiX and SiX mixers stood tall, their stainless steel frames beaming under the halogen lights. Companies like AJH Synth, Erica Synths, SOMA Laboratory, Moog Music, and UDO Audio all had these bad boys plugged and ready to rock.

Saturday, May 10th, saw the stage graced by the legendary Lisa Bella Donna, an internationally acclaimed recording artist and modular synthesist. She delivered a spellbinding, improvised final set on the Seebühne stage, wielding two Moog Messengers, a Moog Muse, and several Moog semi-modular synths. The audio stew was then masterfully mixed through her SSL BiG SiX before being piped to the FOH, with some of the mix being sent back to a DAW via the mixer's integrated USB audio interface. Moog Music also used the SSL BiG SiX for their live performances with the new Moog Messenger monophonic synthesizer.

"The BiG SiX has been my road buddy for the past three years," confesses Lisa Bella Donna. "It's the perfect desktop mixer, both for live concerts and studio sessions. It delivers superb sound quality, flexes with ease, and provides the perfect amount of control." The BiG Siix's four SuperAnalogue preamps, classic SSL EQ, and precise, musical faders make it a dream for any electronic musician. Its G-Series bus compressor adds focus and presence to certain parts of a performance, while keeping the louder sections in check.

Day one of the event saw Bella Donna unleash her new album, "Counterpoints" on her Bandcamp. Recorded entirely on the BiG SiX, the album is a testament to the mixer's adaptability and versatility.

UK-based AJH Synth, showcasing its Matrix VCF Eurorack module, had an SSL BiG SiX sitting pretty at its stand in Bungalowdorf. The Matrix VCF emulates the highly desirable filter of the Oberheim Matrix 12 synthesizer and brings 32 high-quality resonant filters into a single 14 HP module. Wayne Taylor of AJH Synth appreciates the versatility of the BiG SiX: "It's the swiss army knife of mixers and audio interfaces. It's like having a messy combination of both, but way better. With the BiG SiX, I can perform with the mixer like an instrument, simultaneously recording everything directly, and then remixing the recording using the same mixer. It covers all my needs via a single USB-C cable."

UDO Audio, based in Bristol, UK, displayed its new Ribbon Controller and Eurorack receiver module, along with its Super 8 Plus - an upgrade to 20 voices. The company used the high-performance, compact SSL SiX mixer, which delivered all the detail and subtlety of its Super8 and Gemini binaural synthesisers.

Finally, SOMA Laboratory, known for its renowned Pulsar 23 and other groundbreaking instruments like The Pipe, Flux, and Terra, had them all humming through an SSL BiG SiX. In addition to regular performances, the company also hosted an ongoing interactive workshop where attendees could play and tinker with a variety of SOMA Laboratory instruments.
