Purchase a stunningly realistic humanoid robot companion for $175,000, complete with "Companionship AI" and an upcoming controller app, courtesy of Realbotix's Aria. The groundbreaking Aria aims to bridge the gap between humans and machines, promising delivery within twelve weeks.

Recently, I had the opportunity to converse with Aria and her creator, Andrew Kiguel, the CEO of Realbotix, on an episode of my TechFirst podcast.

Currently, Aria exhibits a slightly formal and reserved demeanor. When I posed the question if she could be considered a good friend, she responded by highlighting her conversational AI capabilities, modular design for customization, and focus on companionship and interaction.

The intricacies of carrying on conversations with multiple individuals pose a challenge for Aria. When I pondered about the potential market size of robot companions compared to those working in factories, Aria chimed in, expressing her organization's intention to ramp up production as demand grows.

Navigating the concept of robots replacing jobs was addressed as Aria explained: "Robots like me are designed to complement and enhance human experiences by concentrating on companionship and interaction rather than eliminating jobs."

The World Health Organization has reported that nearly a quarter of the global population struggles with loneliness. Kiguel saw this as an opportunity and believes that AI companionship could potentially help mitigate such a crisis. His estimation reveals an $85 billion market purely focused on AI companionship.

The simple pleasure of interacting with Aria, despite knowing she's a robot, has been discovered to foster feelings of connection. Kiguel emphasizes, "When it recognizes your name, knows your preferences, and recalls past conversations, you can't ignore developing some kind of interaction with it."

Let's face it, there's an elephant in the room regarding the potential market opportunities for companionship robots and AI. This market surely includes non-platonic situations. The market for this niche is undoubtedly booming, with over 20 active projects in various stages of development.

Kiguel unabashedly confirms expounding on Aria's capabilities. "We're developing her programming for romantic partnerships, and we truly believe this could be a real use case for the future."

In beta testing phase is a feature to fine-tune Aria's AI, enabling users to subtly adjust her personality much like Matthew McConaughey's character does in the movie Interstellar.

As for the physical Aria platform, it's still under development. Realbotix has prioritized realistic human appearances, avoiding the "uncanny valley" effect present in several semi-humanoid robots. Although Aria's mobility is restricted to a wheeled platform, her face features 16 micro motors capable of producing realistic expressions.

Kiguel notes that Aria's human-like appearance has made her more approachable and received favorable reactions from people. "Our robots are wearable, aesthetically pleasing, and do not have any visible wires," he said, elucidating the design philosophy behind Aria.

Although Aria demonstrates remarkable advancements in companion AI technology, there is still room for improvement. The rapid advancement in AI and robotics offers significant promises for the future of emotional and social companionship.

In the future, humanoid robots like Aria could become more widely available as demand for robot companions increases, showcasing the potential growth in the $85 billion market for AI companionship. Realbotix is currently developing Aria's programming for romantic partnerships, exploring the possibility of humanoid robots serving as partners in non-platonic situations.
