Gamescom 2022: A Gaming Extravaganza in Cologne
Gamescom 2022, Europe's largest gaming event, is set to captivate thousands of fans in Cologne, Germany, from August 24 to August 28. This year's event promises an array of exciting announcements, trailers, and demos for upcoming video and computer games, as well as the presence of industry heavyweights and celebrities.
The retro-styled game "Death by Scrolling," designed to evoke the feel of gaming three decades ago, was presented by Ron Gilbert, a gaming legend known for his success with "Monkey Island" in the 90s. The event also showcased trailers for numerous new games, including "Hollow Knight: Silksong," "Ninja Gaiden 4," "Silent Hill F," and "Cronos: The New Dawn."
Cronos: The New Dawn, an original game from Bloober Team, is set to be released on September 5, featuring a desolate world and temporal anomaly mechanics. It will also be available on the Switch 2. Another anticipated release is "Unbeatable," which received a final trailer with a release date of November 6.
In the world of television, "Fallout" has made a transition from video game to series, with Amazon Prime presenting the second season of the post-apocalyptic action series at the opening show. Ella Purnell and Aaron Moton, the main actors of "Fallout," were also present.
The horror classic "Resident Evil" is being remade and is called "Requiem." Another intriguing announcement is "World of Warcraft - Midnight," a game about an end-time battle of elves against brutal creatures.
Industry leaders such as Geoff Keighley and Dorothee Bär (CSU), the federal research minister responsible for the industry, and Hendrik Wüst (CDU), the NRW minister president, are expected guests at the event. Eefje Depoortere, known as Sjokz in the gaming and e-sports scene, said, "We're here to play - and it's just getting started."
Streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, and Paramount+ are increasingly present at the Gamescom event, indicating the growing intersection between gaming and streaming entertainment.
Thousands of fans are expected to flock to the Cologne exhibition halls to try out new games, with the actual trade fair beginning on Wednesday morning and running until Sunday. The Gamescom event has broken its own record this year, with over 1,500 exhibitors present, up from 1,462 in 2024.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve due to new technology, Gamescom 2022 promises to be an exciting showcase of what's to come in the world of video and computer games.
