The Price of PS5 Has Increased in Europe
Sony has announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) Digital Edition in Europe and several other countries. The change, which is attributed to a challenging economic environment, affects the cheaper alternative to the classic PS5, with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition now priced at 500 euros, a 50 euro increase from its previous price of 450 euros.
In a blog post, Sony cited persistent high inflation in many countries and fluctuating exchange rates as the primary reasons for the adjustment. This decision comes after the U.S. government announced a 15% tariff on imported products from Japan, which could impact the cost of manufacturing and distributing the PS5 consoles.
The price increase applies to the PS5 Digital Edition in various countries, including the UK, where the new price is £389.99, approximately €455, and in Australia, where the new price is AU$679.95, approximately €410. In contrast, the price for the classic PS5 with a drive remains unchanged at 550 euros in Europe and the UK, but it is becoming more expensive in Australia and New Zealand.
Interestingly, Sony is only increasing the prices of selected models for now, possibly to boost sales of the more expensive variants. The Blu-ray Disc drive, which can be used with both the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro, is becoming cheaper, with its price dropping from 120 euros to 80 euros. This reduction in price could be an attempt to boost sales of this accessory.
Market observers have suggested that the price reduction of the Blu-ray Disc drive may be a strategic move to encourage consumers to purchase the drive separately, rather than opting for the cheaper Digital Edition model without it.
Sony has clarified that the price increase affects only the consoles and not accessories. The company has also stated that it remains committed to offering value to its customers and will continue to strive for the best possible gaming experiences.
This is not the first price adjustment for the PS5. When it was launched in November 2020, the PS5 Digital Edition was priced at 400 euros, and since its introduction, this model has become 100 euros more expensive. The more powerful PS5 Pro remains at a price of 800 euros.
In New Zealand, the new price for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is NZ$799.95, approximately €440. In the US, the price adjustment has not been announced yet, but it is expected to follow suit.
