Fake engine oil circulating in Malaysia's marketplace is posing a threat to consumers, as unscrupulous sellers resort to deceptive tactics to mislead buyers.

Malaysia's Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) reported that the synthetic oil is being sold on e-commerce platforms at prices significantly lower than genuine products. In a statement, the ministry stated that these illicit operations employ various strategies to deceive consumers, such as reusing original oil bottles, refilling them with recycled oil, and distributing them to non-authorized engine oil dealers.

To evade detection, the syndicates packaging their products in containers that mimic the original packaging. The KPDN advises consumers to purchase engine oil from authorized dealers or branded petrol stations and to scan the QR code or check the serial number on the packaging to verify the product's authenticity. Additionally, consumers should carefully inspect the containers for any signs of tampering.

Wan, a vehicle workshop operator from Shah Alam, acknowledged the rising issue of counterfeit and low-quality engine oil in the market. He explained that using such oil leads to noticeable effects on the vehicle, as it causes the engine to feel heavy and contaminated, resembling a vehicle running on burnt oil. Wan cautioned against recommending fake oil to customers, as it poses a risk to vehicles and tarnishes the workshop's reputation.

The issue, Wan contends, lies not only with unscrupulous sellers but also with consumers who seek cheaper prices, ultimately contributing to the proliferation of counterfeit engine oil. In his experience, some foreign-owned workshops sell these products, and he has seen used engine oil containers being washed and refilled with recycled oil.

Kamal, another workshop operator from Kajang, concurred with Wan, stating that the price of genuine engine oil starts at RM80, depending on whether it is semi-synthetic or fully synthetic. He added that attractive discounts and package deals for engine oil are often unrealistic for businesses to profit from and should raise suspicion.

In Shah Alam, banners promoting cheap engine oil offers were observed at several workshops, as reported by Harian Metro.

When purchasing engine oil, it is essential to exercise caution and adhere to guidelines that ensure authenticity. By purchasing from authorized dealers, closely inspecting the packaging, and comparing prices with market standards, consumers can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to counterfeit engine oil. Furthermore, exercising due diligence can help preserve the longevity of their vehicles and protect their hard-earned money.
