Tesla's Powerwall 2 battery units face recalls in Australia due to overheating issues, and replacement devices are being provided at no cost.
Tesla Recalls Batch of Powerwall 2 Units in Australia Due to Overheating and Fire Incidents
Tesla has announced a recall of a batch of Powerwall 2 home energy storage units in Australia due to overheating and fire incidents. The recall applies to Powerwall 2 systems manufactured in the United States and sold in Australia between November 2020 and June 2022.
The issue has been traced to lithium-ion battery cells supplied by a third-party manufacturer. These battery cells may fail and overheat, potentially leading to serious consequences including fire, property damage, or injury.
Each Powerwall 2 comes with a 14 kWh rechargeable lithium-ion battery for storing solar energy, backup power, or grid support. The Powerwall 2 is designed for household use, backup power, or grid support through Tesla's virtual power plant program.
Tesla has already taken steps to lower the risk by remotely discharging affected batteries. Affected Powerwall 2 units will be replaced at no cost. Customers impacted by the recall will be contacted directly through the Tesla app and by service providers to arrange a replacement.
Homeowners are advised to check their Tesla app to confirm whether their unit is affected. If a unit is unaffected, Tesla will perform a remote discharge process to ensure safety.
Tesla has set up an official support page for the recall, titled "Tesla Powerwall 2 Replacement". The recall is only in Australia and no similar recalls have been issued in Canada, the United States, or other markets where Powerwall 2 is sold.
Tesla will evaluate compensation for lost energy savings on a case-by-case basis for affected Powerwall 2 units. The company urges customers to prioritise safety and follow the instructions provided in the Tesla app and by service providers.
