Tesla Unveils Supercharging Network in India, Focusing on Major Metro Areas

Tesla is set to launch its Supercharging network in India, with a focus on the two major metro areas—Mumbai and Delhi-NCR. The electric vehicle giant plans to establish a comprehensive charging infrastructure in these cities, ensuring rapid and efficient charging for Tesla owners.

Supercharger Stations in Mumbai

In Mumbai, Tesla has planned four V4 Supercharger stations strategically located at Lower Parel, Bandra Kurla, Navi Mumbai, and Thane. Each station will boast four charging points, making a total of sixteen high-speed charging stations across the city.

Supercharger Stations in Delhi-NCR

Similarly, in the Delhi-NCR region, Tesla will set up four Supercharger stations at Aerocity and Saket in Delhi, Gurugram (Golf Course Road), and Noida, each with four charging points.

Destination Chargers for Longer Stays

In addition to Supercharger stations, Tesla will install approximately a dozen destination chargers at hotels and malls in these metros. These chargers are designed for overnight and medium-duration charging, providing an alternative for extended stays.

Charging Speed Details

Tesla’s V4 Superchargers support very high DC fast charging speeds, typically up to 250 kW or more, enabling rapid charging of Tesla vehicles. While the exact speeds for the India stations have not been explicitly listed, the designation "V4 Supercharger" implies these are the latest fast chargers comparable to global Tesla standards.

Extending the Network

The Supercharging network will also extend with Superchargers along popular routes out of Mumbai and Delhi, similar to Tesla’s global rollouts, ensuring corridor charging for longer trips.

After-Sales Service Centers

Tesla India is also building after-sales service centers in Mumbai and Delhi, alongside delivery hubs and logistics support.

Key Points

  • Total initial Supercharger stations: 8 (4 in Mumbai, 4 in Delhi-NCR), each with 4 charging points.
  • Charging type: V4 DC fast Superchargers (high-speed charging, likely up to 250 kW).
  • Additional dozen destination chargers in both metros for slower, longer-term charging.
  • Locations: Mumbai (Lower Parel, Bandra Kurla, Navi Mumbai, Thane); Delhi-NCR (Aerocity, Saket, Gurugram, Noida).

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the charging network has not been announced yet but is expected to be competitive for Tesla owners. Non-Tesla EV owners can also use the network, but likely at higher rates or via a subscription model, as practiced in other markets.

The Tesla Model Y, Tesla's maiden offering for India, can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes with Tesla Superchargers. The Model Y is available in Standard and Long Range variants in India, with prices starting at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Deliveries are scheduled to start from September.

Additional Features

The charging speed on Tesla Superchargers can vary due to factors like battery state of charge and temperature. The Tesla supercharging stalls will have a peak charging speed of 250 kW, while destination chargers will provide charging at 11 kW. The cost of charging at Tesla supercharging stalls will start at ₹24 per kW, while destination chargers will cost ₹14 per kW.

Each Tesla supercharging stall will be equipped with DC fast chargers, while destination chargers will be AC chargers. The first Tesla charging station in Mumbai will have four V4 supercharging stalls and four destination chargers.

The Model Y can complete five trips between these two locations with a single charge using Tesla Superchargers. The Tesla Model Y in India arrives as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). The Tesla supercharging network maintains an uptime of 99.95%.

The payment process for the charging station will be available on the Tesla app on your smartphone. Tesla will open its second experience centre in Delhi, likely located in Aerocity. The distance between the Gateway of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is nearly 29 km one way. The Model Y is equipped with a built-in navigation system that guides to the nearest supercharging station.

  1. The Tesla Supercharging network in India will not only cater to major metro areas, such as Mumbai and Delhi-NCR, but also include electric vehicles in people's lifestyles, as Tesla plans to establish charging infrastructure for its cars.
  2. Mumbai will have four V4 Supercharger stations and a dozen destination chargers for Tesla electric vehicles, while Delhi-NCR region will have similar setup, enhancing the technology incorporated in these cities' transportation system.
