Tesla and Samsung Electronics Team Up for AI6 Chip Production
Tesla's AI6 chip is being manufactured by Samsung Electronics at their new fabrication facility located in Taylor, Texas, near Tesla's headquarters. This strategic partnership was marked by a $16.5 billion multi-year deal between the two companies, starting around 2026 and continuing through 2033.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, emphasized the importance of this manufacturing arrangement and mentioned he would personally oversee the production line at the Texas plant to accelerate progress. The AI6 chips, which succeed Tesla’s Dojo-related D1 and AI5 chips, will power Tesla’s advanced AI systems, including Full Self-Driving, Optimus humanoid robots, and future AI infrastructure.
The Texas location was chosen partly for its proximity to Tesla’s Gigafactory and Musk’s home, facilitating closer collaboration between Tesla and Samsung during the manufacturing process. As for the Samsung Electronics' involvement, they will be responsible for manufacturing the AI6 chip in a new large-scale factory in Texas.
Meanwhile, the future of the Dojo supercomputer remains unclear. Previously, reports suggested that the Dojo supercomputer team was ended by Elon Musk. However, Musk's statement did not confirm or deny the news about the future of the Dojo supercomputer. The Dojo supercomputer is used for training the autonomous driving systems of Tesla vehicles through data and video processing and recognition.
In another development, approximately 20 people from the Dojo team have joined DensityAI, a new AI company led by former Tesla leaders. The AI5 'chip' is currently being manufactured by TSMC between Taiwan and Arizona.
Tesla is also designing chips for Artificial Intelligence for its vehicles. The Tesla AI5, AI6, and subsequent chips are designed to be excellent for inference and at least very good for training. They are intended to optimize processes and allocate resources for inference.
