Tesla slashes Model Y price in Canada by $20,000, introduces Diamond Black color option
Tesla has made a strategic move to import the Model Y electric vehicles (EVs) from its Giga Berlin factory in Germany, instead of the Giga Shanghai factory in China, to avoid the 100% tariffs imposed by the Canadian government on all Chinese-made EVs.
The decision comes as a response to the Canadian government's tariff on EVs imported from China, which was set to take effect in April 2025. This tariff makes Model Ys from Giga Shanghai prohibitively expensive for Canadian customers. In contrast, Canada and the EU have a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) that eliminates tariffs on European imports, allowing Model Ys imported from Giga Berlin to avoid these steep costs.
As a result of this shift, Tesla has reduced the price of the Model Y in Canada by CAD 20,000, bringing it down to CAD 64,990. This price is $5,000 below the pre-tariff price of CAD 69,990. Despite the price drop, Tesla has not lowered the prices of any other vehicles in Canada.
The Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) price in Canada was previously CAD 84,990. The introduction of the Diamond Black paint option, available for an additional CAD 2,000, may also be an effort to restore sales volume in the Canadian market.
The estimated delivery window for Model Y orders placed today is September or October, which is unusually long compared to typical delivery windows from vehicles produced in the U.S. This indicates that Tesla is managing logistics to route Model Ys from Europe to Canada, which may involve higher transportation costs and longer delivery times.
This tariff-driven decision to import Model Ys from Giga Berlin is a strategic response to maintain affordability and sales in Canada despite challenging trade conditions. Tesla is prioritizing maintaining Model Y availability and pricing competitiveness in Canada, demonstrating the impact of trade policy on Tesla's supply chain strategies for the Canadian market.
