Tesla Heading Towards IAA in Munich?

The International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, Germany, played host to the third iteration of IAA Mobility this year, with several major automakers in attendance. However, one notable absence was Tesla, the electric vehicle giant.

Tesla's decision not to participate in IAA Mobility 2023 follows a pattern the company has established in recent years. Tesla tends to bypass traditional auto shows like the IAA, favouring direct-to-consumer communication and product launches through its own events. This strategy was evident in the lack of Tesla's presence at IAA Mobility 2023, as search results do not mention the brand's participation, and there is no public statement from Tesla regarding their absence.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) announced Tesla's decision a month before the show's start. Other manufacturers like Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Renault, and Volkswagen were actively participating in the event, but Tesla was conspicuously absent.

This trend aligns with Tesla’s broader strategy of avoiding traditional automotive trade shows and press events to concentrate on its own controlled announcements and software updates, emphasizing direct engagement with customers rather than traditional exhibition formats.

The IAA has been held in Munich three times in total, with the most recent being this year. The first Munich edition of the IAA was marked by larger protests compared to the more recent events, including IAA Mobility 2023. However, the connection between the protests and Tesla's decision not to attend IAA Mobility 2021 remains unclear.

In the first seven months of 2021, Tesla ranked 9th in electric vehicle registrations in Germany, a significant drop from a few years ago when it was the leader in the German market. Tesla's recent loss of market share and popularity in Europe and Germany could potentially influence its decision to forgo traditional auto shows.

Despite its absence, Tesla was present at the last IAA two years ago, celebrating the German premiere of its revised Model 3. Compared to other manufacturers, Tesla's appearance at the event was rather small.

Initial inquiries to Tesla regarding the decision remained unanswered. Protests against Tesla have occurred, with CEO Elon Musk's political activities as a central focus. However, no reasons have been given for Tesla's decision to not participate in IAA Mobility 2021 or 2023.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Tesla adapts its strategies and whether it will continue to bypass traditional auto shows in favour of direct-to-consumer communication.
