Wall Street: Tech Stocks and Mixed Market Signals

Tech Sector Profit Taking Halts Nasdaq's Ascent

The excitement on Wall Street is tempered as the Nasdaq experiences a slight setback following recent gains. Meanwhile, Foot Locker skyrockets nearly 90% due to a megamerger with a competitor.

On Thursday, major indices ended with mixed results: the Dow Jones surged 0.7% to 42,323 points, while the broad-based S&P 500 saw a modest increase of 0.4% to 5,917. However, the tech-heavy Nasdaq dipped 0.2% to 19,112. The market's collective breath is held as trade tensions with China ease, yet the looming trade war under President Trump's high tariffs continues to cast a shadow. "Though tension with China seems to decrease, the trade story is far from over, and it will take time for the tariffs to appear in economic data," said Ellen Zentner, Morgan Stanley's chief U.S. economist.

Walmart: Potential Price Hikes Ahead

Retail industry performance impressed in April, despite trade constraints. U.S. retail revenues inched up by 0.1% compared to the previous month. Walmart, America's retail titan, managed to perform better than predicted but warned of impending price hikes. The stock finished the day with a small dip of 0.5%.

The mega-merger of Foot Locker and Dick's Sporting Goods has propelled Foot Locker's share price, which spiked 85.7%. Dick's offers $24 in cash or 0.1168 shares of Dick's stock for Foot Locker shareholders. Unfortunately, Dick's stock suffered a 14.6% blow as a result.

Cisco, a U.S. networking giant, shined with a 4.8% growth boost. Its annual outlook received an uplift due to continued strong demand for data centers supporting artificial intelligence (AI). Meta, on the other hand, felt the weight as a late-day report from The Wall Street Journal dampened investor spirits. The newspaper hinted that top AI "Behemoth" release delays await due to AI capabilities concerns.

UnitedHealth shares took a steep 10.9% plunge to a five-year low. The U.S. Justice Department reportedly launched a criminal investigation into potential Medicare fraud involving UnitedHealth. However, the company claims no knowledge of the scandal.

The Pulse of the Oil Market

The specter of a potential nuclear agreement between the U.S. and Iran sent North Sea Brent and U.S. WTI crude oil prices tumbling by more than 2%. If a deal materialized, it could result in a surge of Iranian oil entering the market.

The U.S. Dollar Index on the foreign exchange market eased by 0.2% to settle at 100.8 points. Future adjustments to monetary policy from the Federal Reserve could provoke shifts in the market in the coming months. Jerome Powell, Fed chairman, acknowledged a dramatically transformed economic landscape over the past five years. The central bank is now reviewing its monetary policy strategy, which was last revised amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Emphasis on employment was top priority at that time.
