Taiwan, US Explore High-Tech Partnership: Maintain Base, Expand Globally

Taiwan is exploring strategic partnerships with the United States in the high-tech sector, with a focus on maintaining its industrial base while expanding global reach. This comes as the United States seeks increased Taiwanese investment and tariff cuts.

Taiwan's industrial strategy aims to 'remain rooted in Taiwan and deploy around the world, with bilateral strategic cooperation.' This approach is reflected in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's (TSMC) plans to invest $165 billion in chip factories in Arizona, with the bulk of production staying in Taiwan.

Taiwan is considering forming a high-tech strategic partnership with the United States, proposing a 'Taiwan model' that focuses on expanding United States production capacity without relocating supply chains. The United States, in turn, is seeking to cut the 20 percent tariff on Taiwanese exports and increase Taiwanese investment.

Leading the talks is Taiwan's Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun, who is negotiating with Washington. The United States, however, has proposed a 50-50 split in chip making, which Taiwan is unlikely to agree to. Instead, Taiwan is looking for a more balanced approach to cooperation.

Taiwan and the United States are in discussions to strengthen their high-tech partnership, with Taiwan aiming to maintain its industrial base while expanding globally. The United States, meanwhile, is seeking increased Taiwanese investment and tariff cuts. Despite some disagreements, both sides are committed to exploring areas of cooperation.
