Swiggy competes with Zomato by introducing Toing, an app offering budget-friendly food choices in Pune.
Swiggy, the prominent food delivery giant, has initiated a new phase with the introduction of its standalone app called Toing. This novel service is targeted towards budget-conscious consumers and is currently operational across select regions of Pune, including Kothrud, Hinjewadi, Wakad, Aundh, and Pimple Saudagar.
Toing is positioned as a hub for compact yet substantial meals, sourced from local eateries instead of cloud kitchens. The menu emphasizes affordability, offering a range of dishes such as burgers, sandwiches, fries, rolls, shakes, coffee, mini meals, cakes, and desserts. Items on Toing's menu are primarily priced between Rs 100 and Rs 150, and free delivery is provided for orders above Rs 99. The app currently imposes a platform fee of Rs 12.
Swiggy has chosen Pune for the pilot of Toing, relying on the city's dense population of students and early-career professionals with limited disposable incomes. This move could potentially alter competitive dynamics between Swiggy and Rapido, as the latter has recently ventured into the food-delivery arena with its service Ownly, offering lower restaurant commissions.
In related news, reports indicate that Swiggy is contemplating divesting its stake in Rapido for up to Rs 2,500 crore. Swiggy has explored low-cost formats by introducing the "99 Store" within its main app, offering meals priced between Rs 49 and Rs 149 across more than 175 cities. Swiggy is focusing on segmenting its delivery businesses through standalone apps, mirroring the approach it has taken with Instamart and Snacc.
Toing is currently accessible on the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. Swiggy plans to select Bengaluru as the next city for the expansion of Toing, the new scarcity-sensitive food delivery service. There are no immediate plans to extend Toing beyond Pune.
