Strategies for Post-End-of-Support Windows 10 Phase
==============================================================
Microsoft is set to end its support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, leaving users vulnerable to increased risks. These risks include no more security updates, bug fixes, or technical support, making devices susceptible to viruses, malware, ransomware, compliance issues, loss of software compatibility, and potential data breaches.
Given these risks, especially for businesses handling sensitive data, it's crucial for users to start planning their transition away from Windows 10 before October 2025.
Jorg Thatje, the Digital Inclusion Representative of the Digital Hub Oldenburg, emphasized the importance of awareness and proactive planning in a community event at the Lensahn community library on July 16, 2025. His talk highlighted the critical security risks, the need for timely migration strategies, and the practical alternatives available to users.
One of the alternatives discussed was upgrading to Windows 11 if your hardware supports it. This would ensure continued security and feature updates. If your current device cannot run Windows 11 efficiently, purchasing a new PC might be the best option.
Another alternative is Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, a paid option available for up to three years post-October 2025, allowing critical security patches for Windows 10.
It's also essential to backup important data before any upgrade or transition to prevent loss. Some users may consider unsupported or unofficial upgrade methods, but these carry risks and are generally not recommended.
Microsoft will keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus updates on Windows 10 until 2028, offering some limited protection even after support ends.
The Lensahn community library is hosting an event on July 16, 2022, at 7 pm, to address questions about this transition. Registration is required, and admission is free. The event will last approximately 90 minutes, and drinks will be provided. Participants can expect an informative and lively event, with clear examples and discussions on topics such as data security, environmental aspects, and costs.
This transition affects millions of computers worldwide, including those in Ostholstein. So, it's crucial for users to take the necessary steps to ensure their systems remain secure and supported.

- Given the approaching end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025, businesses dealing with sensitive data should consider alternatives like upgrading to Windows 11 or Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, or even purchasing new devices, to ensure continued security and support.
- As Microsoft will only provide Microsoft Defender Antivirus updates on Windows 10 until 2028, users must plan to transition away from Windows 10 before October 2025, backup their data, and be mindful of the risks associated with unsupported upgrade methods.
