Stirring Optimism in Kendall Square: Biogen's Pioneering Advancement Makes Waves

In the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Biogen, a pioneering biotechnology company, took a significant step forward in its journey with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new state-of-the-art facility. The event, held on Tuesday, celebrated the company's commitment to Kendall Square and its rich history in the area.

The new facility, scheduled to open in 2028, will serve as a consolidated headquarters for Biogen, a company that was founded by Nobel laureates Phillip Sharp and Wally Gilbert in 1978. The joint venture partners for this project are MIT's Investment Management Company (MITIMCo) and BioMed Realty, a Blackstone Real Estate portfolio company.

The groundbreaking ceremony was emceed by Kirk Taylor, president and CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey addressed the crowd, expressing her belief that Massachusetts science saves lives and that Biogen is building the future of medicine and innovation. MIT President Sally Kornbluth echoed this sentiment, describing Biogen's move as a "very important signal to the world right now."

The event featured a specially created Lego model of the new building and a historic timeline of Biogen's origin story overlaid on Kendall Square's transformation. The Kendall Common development, where the new Biogen facility is being constructed, will ultimately include four commercial buildings, four residential buildings (including affordable housing), open space, retail, entertainment, and a community center.

The new research and development headquarters of Biogen, designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, will optimize the company's scientific discovery and clinical processes. Both Sharp and Gilbert, who were present at the event, received an impromptu standing ovation.

The theme of the event was "Making breakthroughs happen in Kendall Square." The event was attended by Biogen and MIT employees, business leaders, and public officials. The new facility at MIT's Kendall Common will be the first building to be constructed, marking a new chapter in the square's innovative ecosystem.

Chris Veihbacher, Biogen's CEO, expressed pride in the company's decision to invest in Kendall Square, stating that it is a place where breakthroughs happen. Patrick Rowe, Senior Vice President of MITIMCo's real estate group, shared this sentiment, expressing excitement for the impact that the Biogen project will have on Kendall Square and the advancement of the innovation ecosystem.

With the groundbreaking ceremony complete, Biogen is one step closer to realising its vision for a consolidated headquarters that will drive scientific discovery and clinical innovation in Kendall Square.
