Starmer Condemns Rising Anti-Semitic Hatred After Manchester Synagogue Attack

Sir Keir Starmer, Labour Party leader, has expressed concern about the rising anti-Semitic hatred in the United Kingdom. This follows a terrorist attack on a Manchester synagogue, which authorities have confirmed. The incident comes after a similar attack in Hartlepool in 2023, both inspired by the Middle East conflict. Jewish communities are on high alert, with the Community Security Trust reporting a doubling of anti-Jewish incidents since October.

Sir Keir Starmer has called for the defeat of anti-Semitic hatred, stating that it cannot be allowed to flourish in the United Kingdom. The Labour leader was joined by assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor, who assured communities that United Kingdom policing is mobilising in response to the attack.

The Manchester attack was confirmed as a terrorist incident. It follows the last terrorist murder in the United Kingdom, in October 2023, which was inspired by the war in the Middle East, as warned by MI5. The perpetrator of the Hartlepool attack in 2023, who targeted a Christian residential community, was also motivated by the Gaza conflict.

The Jewish community has been proactive in its own protection. It has implemented measures such as security personnel and volunteer watch groups. However, the prime minister acknowledged the daily threat of anti-Semitic hatred, requiring round-the-clock protection for Jewish buildings. According to Home Office figures, a third of recorded religious hate crimes in the United Kingdom are committed against Jewish people.

In response to the rising incidents, London's mayor Sadiq Khan has reassured Jewish communities that additional police officers will be deployed in the capital. While police have stepped up policing visibility around synagogues, they do not suspect an increased threat to them. The United Kingdom government and law enforcement are committed to protecting Jewish communities and combating anti-Semitic hatred.
