Cascade Space Secures $5.9 Million Seed Funding for Space Communication System Advancements
Cascade Space, a company specialising in the design, test, and operation of spacecraft communication systems, has announced the successful completion of a $5.9 million seed funding round. This investment will primarily accelerate the development of the Cascade Portal, the core online software platform for space communication system design, testing, and operation.
The Cascade Portal empowers engineers to design RF systems swiftly, generate test plans, and ensure compatibility with ground stations. By reducing design iteration time from weeks to hours, the platform aims to streamline the process and make it more efficient. The funding will also support the further enhancement of Cascade’s open-source spacelink Python library, a key component underpinning communication system analysis functions in the Portal.
In addition to the Cascade Portal, Cascade Space is developing Cascade Network, a growing ground station network specifically built to support deep space and lunar missions. This network aims to address the current oversubscription and limitations of existing networks like NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN). By removing major communication system bottlenecks, these efforts will enable faster mission execution with high assurance, particularly for companies targeting lunar and deep space exploration.
Jacob Portukalian, co-founder and CEO of Cascade, stated that the company's mission is to provide tools and infrastructure for spacecraft communication system design, test, and operations. He expressed excitement about building an end-to-end platform to accelerate space exploration. Portukalian also mentioned that communication system design, test, and operation is a major bottleneck for space companies, particularly those going to lunar and deep space.

This investment reflects confidence in Cascade Space’s integrated approach combining software tools and ground network infrastructure to accelerate space exploration.
Cascade Space's team comprises veterans from SpaceX and Astra, emphasising their expertise in spacecraft communication systems. The company's goal is to provide reliable communication for demanding missions, particularly for missions to the Moon and beyond.
