Sony Exits Russia Completely
Sony, the Japanese multinational tech giant, made the decision to cease operations in Russia in 2022, marking the end of its 18-year presence in the country. This move was largely a response to geopolitical factors, particularly the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Beginning of the End
The journey towards Sony's exit from Russia began in March 2022, when the company halted shipments of game consoles and suspended the PlayStation Store operations. The company also stopped distributing films and suspended other activities.
The Withdrawal Process
In 2023, Sony faced difficulties in curtailing operations in Russia and continued to sell off warehouse residues. The branded stores in Russia began to close down in February 2024, a process that was completed by summer due to supply cessation.
On October 10, 2024, Sony officially submitted an application for the liquidation of its Russian operations to the Federal Tax Service. Finally, on August 11, 2025, Sony officially terminated its operations in Russia, including the liquidation of its subsidiaries like Sony Mobile Communications Rus.
Financial Implications
Sony's exit from Russia had significant financial implications. The company reported a 70% revenue drop in 2024 and faced challenges selling assets at reduced prices due to Russian regulations. Additionally, Sony had to manage compliance with international sanctions, which further complicated its operations in the region.
A Helping Hand for Ukraine
In a show of support for Ukraine, Sony donated $2 million to aid war-affected Ukrainians through the UN and Save the Children in March 2022.
