Software indications suggest expansion of Model Y to a 6-seat variant, alongside introduction of Grok personality technology
In a significant development, Tesla is set to release a six-seater variant of the Model Y, known as the Model Y L, globally in 2025. This new model, which boasts a longer wheelbase and taller profile, is set to offer a more comfortable and spacious riding experience compared to the current seven-seat configuration.
The Model Y L features a three-row, six-seat layout with captain’s chairs in the second row, a departure from the standard seven-seat configuration that typically includes a full third-row bench. The wheelbase of the Model Y L has been extended by approximately 150 to 200 mm (6 to 7.3 inches), increasing its overall length to about 4,976 mm and height by 44 mm.
This new variant is also expected to come with more motor power, rated at 455 hp (or about 340 kW in some filings), a moderate upgrade over the standard Model Y’s output. The Model Y L has been designed with improved rear design and headroom to accommodate the third-row passengers comfortably.
The Model Y L was first confirmed for launch in China in fall 2025, with a U.S. and global debut expected soon after. The price is expected to position this variant between the standard Model Y and the Model X, roughly starting around $56,000.
In addition to the Model Y L, Tesla's 2025.20.3 software update also includes a navigation feature that advises drivers to "slow down to save energy." The navigation feature uses fleet data to optimize range by informing drivers how much slower others drive at certain locations to save X% of battery.
While Tesla has not officially confirmed the six-seater Model Y, firmware evidence has added credibility to the rumor. A six-seat layout for the Model Y could strike a better balance between comfort and passenger space, making it an attractive option for families and those seeking a more spacious ride.
The update also introduces a new language tutor personality for Grok, Tesla's in-car AI. The new personalities include "argumentative," "therapist," "unhinged," "romantic," and "sexy," suggesting an imminent release and expanding the vehicle's interactive capabilities.
