Six Citroen vehicle models qualified for the £1500 Electric Vehicle Incentive
UK Government's Electric Car Grant Boosts Affordability of Electric Vehicles
The UK government has announced the launch of its new Electric Car Grant (ECG), aiming to make owning an electric car more affordable for thousands of people across the country. As part of the 2025 scheme, several electric car models have been confirmed to receive the ECG of £1,500, although none have qualified for the higher £3,750 grant so far.
Leading the list of eligible vehicles are models from French manufacturer Citroën, including the ë-C3, ë-C3 Aircross, ë-C4, ë-C4 X, ë-C5 Aircross, and ë-Berlingo. These models, approved early in August 2025, offer a starting price range from around £20,000 to just under the £37,000 cap required for eligibility.
Joining Citroën in the ECG scheme are Renault models such as the 5 supermini, 4, Megane hatchback, Scenic SUV, and the sportier Alpine A290 (excluding its higher-spec GTS model due to price). Vauxhall has also confirmed several models eligible for the grant, including the Corsa Electric, Combo Life Electric, Astra Electric (hatchback and estate), Mokka Electric, Frontera Electric, and Grandland Electric.
Though specific starting prices were not detailed for Nissan models, they have been included in the latest 13 car additions qualifying for the £1,500 grant.
To qualify for the grant, car manufacturers must meet science-backed emissions targets, and individual model lines must start at below £37,000 in entry-level trim. The discount a model receives is determined by its environmental impact, including CO2 emissions in production, energy used in vehicle assembly, and battery manufacturing.
Transport secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the significance of the grant, stating that it will make owning an electric car cheaper, easier, and a reality for thousands more people in the UK. The grant is backed by £650 million of taxpayer funding and is automatically applied at the point of sale without the need for registration.
Greg Taylor, MD of Citroën UK, expressed support for the Electric Car Grant and praised the approval of their electric range as eligible. With the ECG, models like the ë-C3 Aircross now start at £21,595, and the ë-C3 has a starting price of £20,595. The ë-Berlingo starts at £29,740, while the ë-C5 Aircross starts at £32,565.
The government plans to release details of other models eligible for the ECG in the coming days and weeks. While any manufacturer can apply for their car to be included in the scheme, it's thought that cars produced in Asian countries might not be eligible due to the criteria. Only the smaller-battery Dolphin Surf Active, Hyundai Inster, Leapmotor T03, and the ë-C3 offer a cheaper way into a new electric car in the UK.
The ECG is a significant step towards promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions in the UK. As more models become eligible, the grant is expected to make electric cars an increasingly attractive option for consumers, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
- The manufacturing industry in the UK is set to experience a boom with the growing production of electric vehicles, given the increase in demand due to the UK Government's Electric Car Grant.
- The finance sector can also see positive changes as more people opt for electric cars, potentially increasing the number of loan applications and leasing options for these environmentally friendly vehicles.
- As the technology for electric cars advances and their affordability increases due to the Electric Car Grant, there may be a shift towards a lifestyle that prioritizes sustainability and reduced carbon footprint, further impacting various industries such as transportation, energy, and real estate.
