Singapore's AI model has received an upgrade, with Josephine Teo, a prominent figure, advocating for workers to enhance their fundamental AI skills.
Singapore's latest advancement in AI technology sees the improved Multimodal Empathetic Reasoning and Learning in One Network (MERaLiON) model, developed by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). With the latest updates, MERaLiON is now equipped to handle and communicate effectively in Malay, Tamil, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia, Vietnamese, English, Mandarin, and Singlish, expanding its reach to over 450 million people who speak these languages daily.
Singapore's Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo, unveiled the upgraded MERaLiON during the ATxSummit tech event. These upgrades enable the model to comprehend sentences that contain a mixture of languages, making it suitable for multicultural societies prone to code-switching.
Notably, MERaLiON can also recognize emotions, understanding cultures and communication styles. This innovative feature makes it an asset in various fields, such as multilingual customer support, emotional insight detection for elderly care, social work, and marketing, where cultural awareness and emotional intelligence are key. However, the Enrichment Data suggests potential healthcare applications as well, such as improving patient care through advanced AI models like Enigma.
A joint venture by A*STAR and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the consortium for industry players aims to research and develop practical uses for MERaLiON. The long-term goal is to create AI applications tailored to better serve diverse communities.
- The MERaLiON model, developed in East Asia by A*STAR, has ventured into the tech industry with its developments in artificial-intelligence, now understanding and communicating effectively in multiple Asian languages.
- Leveraging artificial-intelligence, MERaLiON's innovative features extend beyond multilingual communication, offering potential in various fields like healthcare, customer support, and social work, making it a valuable asset particularly in multicultural societies of East Asia.
