The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, Xpeng, has taken a significant step forward with the unveiling of the extended-range electric version (EREV) of its popular G6 SUV. This new model is set to offer a total range of approximately 1,400 kilometres, making it a strong competitor in the electric vehicle market.

The powertrain of the EREV variant retains a rear-mounted electric motor, producing 296 PS (about 292 hp) and 450 Nm of torque, complemented by a small internal combustion engine acting as a range extender. The vehicle will be available with two battery options: a base 68.5 kWh unit and an 80.8 kWh long-range pack for the battery-only part.

The EREV G6 boasts rapid charging capabilities, with the battery capable of charging from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes under optimal conditions, delivering up to 400-451 kW of charging power. This rapid charging rate is comparable to some of the fastest charging electric vehicles available today.

In terms of dimensions, the 2025 G6 measures 4,758 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. Inside, the cabin features a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, and Xpeng's proprietary large language model, X-GPT.

The EREV model is expected to be sold alongside the battery-electric G6, rather than replacing it. Notably, the EREV G6 retains the fastback silhouette of the existing battery-electric G6 SUV, but features design changes suggesting a new powertrain.

The battery-electric 2025 Xpeng G6 was officially launched in China on March 13. While no official timeline has been provided for the EREV version of the G6, the prototype's advanced stage suggests it may reach production before the end of 2025.

The interior of the G6 also boasts class-leading interior storage, featuring an 8.9-litre centre console box and a rear cargo area of 647 litres, which can be expanded to 1,752 litres with the seats folded down.

In addition to the G6, Xpeng has seen significant success with the Xpeng Mona M03, reaching cumulative deliveries of 150,000 units in just 10 months. The new Xpeng P7 has also been confirmed as a liftback ahead of its August launch. Xpeng has also reached a 800,000-vehicle cumulative delivery milestone.

A blue light on the vehicle's exterior signals when autonomous functions are active, and exterior updates for the G6 include a 1,942 mm LED light strip, new paint colors (Starry Purple and Cloud Beige), and dark grey-themed wheels and interior trim on select models.

With the introduction of the EREV G6, Xpeng continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, offering consumers the benefits of extended range and rapid charging capabilities while maintaining the style and performance of its popular G6 SUV.

  1. The finance sector may see a significant impact as Chinese automotive company Xpeng, with the release of the extended-range electric version (EREV) of its G6 SUV, offers competitive range and rapid charging capabilities in the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
  2. As the EREV G6 boasts rapid charging capabilities comparable to some of the fastest charging electric vehicles available today, the transportation sector will likely witness improvements in EV infrastructure and consumer travel experiences, given its ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes.
  3. In the technology realm, the EREV G6 will feature Xpeng's proprietary large language model, X-GPT, designed to enhance user experience and provide valuable lifestyle improvements for drivers.
  4. With the increased presence of electric cars, specifically the EREV G6, in the automotive market, it's plausible that the popularity of internal combustion engine vehicles will decline, thereby potentially influencing lifestyle patterns and emissions reductions in the years to come.
