Russo-Pacific Drone Race held in Kamchatka
In a groundbreaking event for the region, the first large-scale open drone competition took place in Kamchatka Krai, Russia. Organised by the Ministry of Digital Development, the tournament brought together drone enthusiasts from various cities across Kamchatka.
The competition, held on an unprecedented scale, attracted eighteen participants aged between 14 and 48. The participants were divided into two categories: amateurs and professionals.
The event space for the drone racing event in Kamchatka is the largest open drone territory in the region, built in collaboration with the regional Ministry of Digital Development last year. Previously, the space was used for indoor tournaments.
The competition disciplines were "Obstacle Course" and "Drone Racing". Each athlete completed the course twice, and winners were determined by the best time sum.
The winners of the competition were Artem Fedorov (Center "Voyn"), Mikhail Shevchuk (Center "Voyn"), and Mikhail Pakhomov (Kamchatka Drone Racing Federation).
Sergey Voroshilov, head of the education department of the Yelizovo municipal district, highlighted the uniqueness of the new platform. Alexander Belikov, the director of the "Patriot" Center, emphasised the significance of the event. The "Patriot" Center, apart from teaching drone piloting, also focuses on drone assembly, technical maintenance, and their application in civilian and patriotic purposes.
Drone operation is a promising direction for youth preparation for the future, according to Belikov. Plans were announced to hold such tournaments regularly, including at the regional level.
Drones have gained global popularity over the past decade, often involving high-speed, skillful piloting of drones through complex courses. However, the history and significance of drone racing competitions in Kamchatka Krai, particularly in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, are not extensively documented in the available data.
Despite the lack of detailed historical or cultural insights about drone racing in the region, the first large-scale competition marks a significant step forward in promoting this exciting sport in Kamchatka Krai.
Technology played a crucial role in the competition, as the participants used advanced drones for the races. The sporty nature of the event was also evident, as the drone racing required skillful maneuvering of the drones through complex courses.
