The year 2024 brought a explosive growth to Spain's online gaming sector, according to the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gaming (DGOJ). The regulator's Annual Report on Online Gaming revealed some jaw-dropping figures - a Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of EUR 1,454.59 million (USD 1,571.6 million), marking a mind-boggling 17.61% increase compared to 2023!

Alongside this revenue surge, the number of active players also skyrocketed, hitting a whopping 1,992,889 users - a whooping 21.71% rise from the previous year!

Casino and Betting Dominate Revenue Segments

Tearing down the revenue by segment, the Online Casino sector took the lead with EUR 730.3 million (USD 789.3 million), claiming a huge 50.23% of the total revenue. The growth in this chunk could be chiefly attributed to slots, which have long ruled Spain's casino market since their debut in 2015. Additionally, live roulette shot up by 10.41% and blackjack grew by 3.8%, though conventional roulette took a nose-dive by 8.46%.

The Betting segment came in close behind with EUR 608.85 million (USD 658 million), accounting for 41.86% of total GGR. This sector witnessed a fantastic 23.8% growth, fueled primarily by conventional sports betting (+23.69%) and live betting (+24.05%). Other counterpart betting rose an impressive 33.45%, but horse betting faced a 16.99% decline.

Meanwhile, Online Poker revenues dwindled by 4.99% due to a 3.48% drop in tournament poker, which accounted for a whopping 73.58% of the market. Cash poker also suffered a 8.97% setback. The shared poker liquidity agreement with France and Portugal, established in 2018, remains a vital feature of Spain's poker market, supporting six active platforms.

Bingo, however, showed a healthy 3.96% growth rate, while contests grappled with a severe 98.53% dropoff.

Marketing and Player Activity on the Rise

The year 2024 also saw a significant increase in marketing expenses in Spain's online gaming industry, totaling EUR 526.3 million (USD 568.7 million). Here's the breakdown:

  • EUR 56.32 million (USD 60.9 million) for affiliate marketing
  • EUR 5.45 million (USD 5.9 million) for sponsorships
  • EUR 261.53 million (USD 282.6 million) for promotions
  • EUR 203 million (USD 219.4 million) for advertising

The monthly average of active gaming accounts reached an impressive 1,433,715, reflecting a booming 23.48% annual increase. Additionally, the average number of new gaming accounts hit 151,898 per month, soaring 34.73% from 2023.

Both deposits and withdrawals followed a positive trend, escalating by 19.62% and 19.73%, respectively. This data underscores Spain's thriving iGaming sector, powered by increased player engagement and smart market investments.
