Robot battery technology advancement: Panasonic introduces new generation batteries for robots

In the competitive world of technology, several major players are vying for a piece of the solid-state battery market.

Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. are among the companies developing solid-state batteries to keep pace with the competition. Toyota Motor Corp., on the other hand, is teaming up with Idemitsu Kosan Co. to install the solid-state batteries they jointly developed in EVs as early as 2027 and 2028.

The development and mass production of these power sources is part of a broader industry effort for more efficient and safer batteries than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Panasonic Holdings Corp., which has extensive experience in electric vehicle batteries, aims to leverage this expertise to claim a bigger slice of the solid-state battery market.

Panasonic will debut a sample batch of its new solid-state batteries during the fiscal year ending March 2027. Initially, these batteries will be used for the next-generation batteries market for robots and other systems in high temperature conditions, such as industrial robots and tire pressure monitoring systems.

TDK Corp. currently leads the small-battery market, but competition is heating up. Besides Panasonic Holdings Corp., major companies working on solid-state batteries for 2027-2028 include Toyota, Volkswagen Group (through its subsidiary PowerCo and partner QuantumScape), Solid Power (partnered with Ford and BMW), and several Chinese firms like EVE Energy and Gotion High-tech.

Notable vehicles equipped with these batteries include Toyota’s future EVs, a modified Ducati V21L electric race motorcycle powered by QuantumScape cells with Volkswagen Group involvement, and BMW demonstration vehicles using Solid Power cells.

Huawei, a technology company, has also unveiled a battery technology with a 3,000km range and a 5-minute charge. The absence of liquid electrolytes in solid-state batteries is a significant factor in their improved safety.

Shoichiro Watanabe, chief technology officer of Panasonic Energy Co., stated the company's plans for the new batteries. Solid-state batteries carry the potential to last longer and endure greater temperatures with a lower risk of leakage or combustion. Chinese carmakers are also fine-tuning technology for 3-minute battery swaps and affordable Chinese battery technology is making an impact in the industry.

As the race for solid-state batteries heats up, it remains to be seen which companies will emerge as leaders in this promising new technology.
