Reporting System Launched for Unruly Conduct on Public Transit via Text Message
In a significant step towards enhancing safety on public transport, Victoria Police has introduced a new text-messaging service called STOPIT. This service, designed for reporting non-urgent incidents of anti-social behaviour, was officially launched to make the public transport network safer and more enjoyable for all users.
The triple zero (000) number remains the primary line for immediate danger and urgent police assistance. However, STOPIT offers a discreet and non-urgent reporting system for passengers to report unwanted sexual or antisocial behaviour on public transport.
The information gathered through STOPIT helps police identify and catch offenders, informing resource-tasking to deter offenders. It's important to note that STOPIT is not a formal report of an incident but a tool for information gathering for the police.
To use STOPIT, people simply need to text the word "STOPIT" to 0499 455 455. After texting the number, users will receive a link to an online form where they can share details about the incident, such as the type of behaviour, service, and time.
STOPIT can be used at the time of the incident or after it has occurred. It's designed for incidents that make the user feel uncomfortable or unsafe but don't require an immediate response. Each STOPIT notification will be reviewed by transit police, and if deemed critical or serious, transit detectives will follow up for more information.
If users reply "YES" to needing immediate assistance while texting STOPIT, they are instantly re-directed to a Triple Zero (000) button and can call from there. For formal reports of a non-urgent crime beyond the public transport network, the 131 444 Police Assistance Line can be used.
RACV Head of Policy, James Williams, has welcomed the new messaging service, stating, "STOPIT makes the public transport network safer and creates a more enjoyable experience for all users." The service is designed to remove barriers and gather more information about matters on public transport that go largely unreported, particularly incidents of unwanted sexual behaviour.
Moreover, the STOPIT form allows users to upload an image or video, which can provide valuable evidence for investigations. However, the service provides several disclaimers before, during, and after use, clearly stating it is not to be used if an urgent response is required.
