Remote Work Gains Traction: Top Five Shifts in the Global Workplace Landscape
Nationwide Joins the Shift to Permanent Remote Work
In a significant move, UK-based building society Nationwide has announced a permanent work-from-anywhere policy, becoming the latest company to embrace flexible work arrangements. This decision, published in a report by the BBC, marks a significant step towards remote work across various industries.
Nationwide, with over 13,000 staff members, has informed its employees that they can work from anywhere, effective immediately. This policy change is a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and is not a temporary measure. As a result, the financial institution plans to close three offices.
The trend of flexible work arrangements is not limited to Nationwide. British Airways, HSBC, Lloyds, and Santander are among the many other companies adopting similar policies. British Airways, for instance, plans to sell off their headquarters at Heathrow and move to more flexible arrangements for thousands of staff members.
Santander, too, has announced plans to reduce their London office space and ask staff to work from home more often. Meanwhile, HSBC and Lloyds are considering split working arrangements.
Other companies leading the way in remote work include Kraken, Humana, HubSpot, and Wise. Kraken operates with a remote-first, work-from-anywhere policy, while Humana offers flexible work styles. HubSpot embraces a hybrid model, and Wise provides a Mobile Wiser scheme, allowing employees to work virtually from almost anywhere in the world for up to 90 days per year.
The shift towards hybrid work is expected to reach 82% by 2025, as many companies integrate AI tools to facilitate remote collaboration and streamline workflows. This trend reflects a broader shift towards flexible work arrangements and work-from-anywhere models across industries.
Nationwide's decision could lead to a significant increase in remote work across industries, encouraging staff to work from home instead of coming to the office. The work-from-anywhere policy at Nationwide is part of a broader trend towards flexible work arrangements, which is being observed across various sectors.
