Record-breaking 24-hour pre-orders of MG4 reach 11,067 units
The MG4 hatchback, a product of MG Motor and owned by SAIC Motor, has made its way to the Chinese market with a bang. Pre-sales of this redesigned compact hatchback began on August 5, 2025, and it was cleared for sale by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shortly thereafter.
The new MG4 variant stands out with its semi-solid-state battery, which contains approximately 5% liquid electrolyte. This battery is rated at a capacity of 70 kWh, boasting an energy density of around 180 Wh/kg (likely pack-level). The battery's unique design delivers a CLTC range of 537 km, and it has passed a 360-degree puncture test, ensuring improved safety.
The battery's cold-weather performance is also impressive, retaining 13.8% more range at –7°C compared to conventional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. The battery chemistry is consistent with manganese-based lithium-ion or LFP types, emphasizing cost-effectiveness, safety, and longevity.
Under the hood, the new MG4 is powered by a single front-mounted 120 kW (161 hp) electric motor. Additional features include options like a 360-degree camera, front and rear radars, a tinted roof, and privacy glass.
The new MG4 is available in four trims: Comfort, Ease, Freedom, and Smart. Two battery pack options are available: 42.8 kWh with a 437 km CLTC range and 53.9 kWh with a 530 km CLTC range. The 70 kWh semi-solid-state pack version, which is expected to be launched around September 2025, is likely to be positioned as a higher-capacity or special edition variant.
The starting price for the all-new MG4 is RMB 73,800 ($10,280), marking a 47.21 percent reduction from the previous model's starting price of RMB 139,800. The battery-equipped variant's pricing will be announced in September.
In the first 24 hours after pre-sales began, the all-new MG4 received 11,067 pre-orders, showcasing strong demand for this innovative electric vehicle.
