In the dynamic world of electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla continues to dominate the Australian market. The Model Y remains the best-selling EV in the country, as revealed in The Driven's month-by-month sales data.

Tesla's dominance was particularly evident in 2022, when it accounted for approximately 58.6% of the market, selling 19,594 vehicles. The Model Y was the top-selling model and held a large share in 2023 and into 2024, continuing to dominate the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment.

However, Tesla's market share has shifted somewhat with increasing competition. In May 2025, the Model Y held a significant 36.6% share, according to the data provided.

Other notable EV brands include Mercedes-Benz, which leads the luxury EV market with models like the EQA, EQC, EQB, and EQS. Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric lineup, which is expected to increase its market share in 2023 and beyond.

Affordable electric SUVs like the MG ZS EV have also gained popularity, addressing the lower-cost segment of the EV market. Other brands making gains in Australia's EV market include Polestar, Volvo, Kia, and Porsche.

Despite the growing competition, Tesla remains the top EV brand in Australia by sales volume and market share through 2023 and into 2024/2025. However, the relative share is decreasing slightly as rivals expand their offerings and appeal, particularly in more affordable and luxury segments.

BYD is also making significant headway in the Australian EV market, particularly due to the success of the SeaLion 7. Kia's growth is attributed to the release of the EV5, EV3, EV9, and other models.

While Tesla remains the biggest seller of EVs in Australia, its sales figures have not reached the highs of 2023 and 2024. Giles Parkinson, the founder and editor of The Driven, Renew Economy, and One Step Off The Grid, owns a Tesla Model 3.

As the EV market in Australia continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Tesla's dominance fares against the growing competition.

  1. The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) has led to an increasing number of brands entering the Australian market, with Tesla remaining the top EV brand by sales volume and market share, but facing growing competition from brands like Mercedes-Benz, BYD, Kia, and MG, which are expanding their electric lineups.
  2. Interestingly, while Tesla's dominance in the Australian EV market is decreasing slightly due to the expanding offerings of rival brands, particularly in more affordable and luxury segments, the Model Y continues to be the top-selling EV model, with Tesla owning a significant share of the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment.
