Racing Game Exploration: Mario Kart World Emerges as a Superb Debut Title for Nintendo Switch 2
Let's Dish About Mario Kart World!
Who doesn't love a good game of Mario Kart? I've put in more hours than you can imagine, from the original Super Mario Kart all the way up to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch. You might think that playing countless hours of the same game would make it boring, but I'm still coming back for more. That's because Mario Kart is simple, chaotic fun at its finest. And trust me, Mario Kart World for the upcoming Switch 2 is no exception.
Nintendo invited us to play Mario Kart World on the Switch 2 for nearly eight hours last week. Though our playtime was only a fraction of the game's possibilities, we got a solid taste of what's in store. This ain't a review - we'll save that for when we've clocked enough hours to really delve into the game's nooks and crannies. For now, let's talk first impressions!
When you've played every single Mario Kart game like I have, you might be thinking, "Again?". But believe me when I say that Nintendo hasn't run out of ideas for this classic kart racer. Mario Kart World truly highlights what the series is all about and its longevity without feeling stale. At its core, the gameplay remains the same - pick a Nintendo character, select a kart or bike, and get ready to race!
One of the things that makes Mario Kart so enjoyable is its unpredictability. A well-timed item like a blue shell can turn the game around in a flash, taking you from last to second place in a heartbeat. Mario Kart World adds even more madness to the races with 24 players competing at once! That's double the previous player count, making each race a wild, chaotic ride.
The Nintendo characters have gotten a redesign, complete with '80s-inspired gear that makes them look fresh as a daisy. There's even a cycling boombox-inspired bike that's destined to blow up on social media. And let's not forget about Cow finally getting his chance to race on Moo Moo Meadows - it's about time, right?
In Free Roam mode, the world map feels alive, packed with NPC racers and items to collect. Each Grand Prix brings four new races, and Battle Mode (Balloon Battle and Coin Runners), VS Races, and Time Trials make a comeback. But my favorite addition is the Knockout Tour, an elimination-style race that tests your skills to the max and is sure to make you hurl colorful language at your screen! In this mode, failure to keep up with the pack means getting the boot, and it's incredibly intense!
Another new feature is rail grinding, where you can ride on various obstacles to gain an edge over your competitors. It's not quite as easy to execute as in games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater, but when timed right, it can help you snag a win or duck an incoming attack.
We also had the chance to try out several multiplayer options, including local split-screen and online play, which supports up to 23 players worldwide! There's also a feature called GameChat, which allows you to chat with friends using your Switch 2 camera (or a third-party webcam). It's a nice addition, but the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong - it's functional, but it's not exactly stunning.
The game's price tag has been a topic of debate - digital and physical versions of the game are priced at $80, while the Switch 2 bundle with Mario Kart World costs $500. But with so much content and the promise of future updates, I think the cost is justified. Just wait until you see the endless model customization options and unlockables!
Bottom line: Mario Kart World is a must-have for any Switch 2 owner. It's everything that makes a Nintendo game a Nintendo game - bright, colorful, and full of surprises. See you on the digital race tracks!
