Qualcomm Boosts Vietnam Presence with New R&D Center and Investments

Qualcomm has strengthened its commitment to Vietnam, opening a new R&D center in Hanoi and investing in local tech companies. The global semiconductor giant has been expanding its presence in the country, with significant investments and collaborations.

In April, Qualcomm acquired a 65% stake in AI company MovianAI from Vingroup for VND1.76 trillion ($66.93 million). This move follows Qualcomm's support for Vsmart in designing 'Made in Vietnam' 4G and 5G smartphones and its partnership with VNPT to deploy Wi-Fi 7 connectivity solutions.

Qualcomm's commitment to Vietnam extends to its R&D efforts. In June, the company opened a major R&D center in Hanoi, staffed entirely by Vietnamese engineers. The center focuses on artificial intelligence applications, one of Qualcomm's three core technology pillars, along with advanced connectivity and high-performance, low-power computing.

Qualcomm's global CEO has expressed plans to expand the firm's R&D footprint in Vietnam, positioning the country as a key base for its R&D segment globally. This decision is supported by the company's successful collaborations with major Vietnamese telecom and technology firms over the past 20 years, including its work with Viettel to build 5G infrastructure based on Open RAN standards. Vietnam is now one of only five countries mastering this technology.

Qualcomm's recent investments and expansions in Vietnam, including its acquisition of MovianAI and the opening of its R&D center in Hanoi, reflect the company's long-term commitment to the country. With its focus on advanced technology and strategic partnerships, Qualcomm is positioning Vietnam as a crucial base for its global operations.
