Sei Labs is making waves in the blockchain world with a new proposal to dump Cosmos transactions and smart contracts in favor of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This shift aims to make Sei more user-friendly and easier to build on.

Say goodbye to the dual support of Cosmos and EVM on Sei. Sei Improvement Proposal-3 (SIP-3) is the latest from Sei Labs, outlining a transition to an EVM-only network. If successful, this means Sei becomes an EVM-exclusive chain, leaving CosmWasm smart contracts and Cosmos transactions behind.

"With EVM usage dominating Sei, this proposal offers a clear path: an EVM-focused architecture designed for the scale of future DeFi, gaming, and real-world applications," shares Jay Jog, co-founder of Sei Labs.

The proposal suggests only EVM addresses will be capable of sending transactions on Sei. Infrastructure will shift to EVM-only APIs, while cosmos-related features such as staking and governance will remain accessible through EVM precompiles.

So, what does this mean for Sei users? You'll need to swap your assets to EVM-native wallets or bridge out Cosmos assets. CosmWasm developers will have to port their applications to EVM.

Transiting to an EVM-only setup could bring numerous benefits:

  1. Simplified Infrastructure - By moving away from the dual support for EVM and CosmWasm, the network becomes more straightforward, reducing overhead and streamlining the developer experience.
  2. Improved User Experience - A unified EVM environment will enable seamless integration with popular Ethereum tools, wallets, and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, making development and adoption quicker.
  3. Optimized Performance - Since Sei v2's launch with EVM support, network activity has been mostly EVM-based (over 80%). Concentrating on EVM transactions would optimize performance by eliminating legacy CosmWasm and Cosmos systems.
  4. Phased Transition - The proposal lays out a three-phase plan: Phase 1 introduces EVM pointers, Phase 2 deprecates new CosmWasm contract deployments and blocks inbound IBC transfers from Cosmos, and Phase 3 fully disables legacy CosmWasm contract execution and non-EVM transactions. This approach ensures a smooth migration with minimal disruption.

While the exact timeline for the transition remains unclear, the potential benefits could position Sei more strongly within the Ethereum ecosystem, boosting interoperability, attracting more developers, and increasing competitiveness in the Layer 1 blockchain market.

Amidst this shift, SEI's price reacted positively, with a 6% jump to $0.2 and a 17.27% increase in trading volume.
