Porsche Design Discontinues Iconic Black Case for a Titanium Tribute to its 1975 Chronograph 1 Model
Porsche Design Unveils Limited-Edition 1975 Chronograph 1
In a nod to its rich history, Porsche Design has released a limited-edition version of the iconic Chronograph 1, paying homage to the 1975 uncoated stainless-steel model. The Chronograph 1 1975 Limited Edition, available now, is a modern take on the original, incorporating updated materials and manufacturing processes.
Limited to just 350 pieces, the watch is made from glass bead-blasted titanium throughout the 40.8mm case and integrated bracelet. This shift from stainless steel to titanium offers exceptional strength, durability, and improved wear resistance, making it a premium choice for collectors.
The dial remains faithful to the original, with a matte black finish, white markers, and hands for maximum contrast. A single pop of Guards Red adorns the chronograph seconds hand, adding a touch of vibrancy. The watch also features a bilingual day-date window (German and English) that resembles the 911 speedometer.
The Chronograph 1 1975 Limited Edition maintains the classic features of the original, such as the 40.8mm case size, hooded lugs, subtle bezel slope, and the way the case sides flow into the bracelet. These design elements contribute to the watch's industrial aesthetic, which is further accentuated by the use of titanium.
The WERK 01.240 movement, an upgrade from the Valjoux 7750, powers the Chronograph 1 1975 Limited Edition. This movement includes flyback chronograph functionality and COSC certification, ensuring precision and reliability. The watch also boasts a 48-hour power reserve and a water resistance of 100m.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was first introduced in 1972 as the world’s first all-black wristwatch, pioneering the use of black PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating derived from fighter jet technology. This coating was inspired by Porsche’s automotive instrument panels and was intended to reduce glare and enhance legibility. Although there is no direct evidence that the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was officially used by military units, its design heritage and materials reflect influences from military aviation engineering.
In 2025, Porsche Design reissued two limited editions of the Chronograph 1 to celebrate this legacy. The original black PVD-coated design was faithfully recreated with modern mechanics, while the 1975 Limited Edition directly references the uncoated stainless-steel model from 1975. This new limited edition is a testament to Porsche Design's commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and attention to detail.
The Chronograph 1 1975 Limited Edition is available now for $9,650 on Porsche Design's website. This is the first time Porsche Design is offering this titanium configuration to anyone, not just owners of specific limited-edition Porsche vehicles. The watch's vintage Porsche Design logos and contemporary branding add a commemorative touch, making this a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
This limited-edition Porsche Design Chronograph 1, a modern reinterpretation of the 1975 uncoated stainless-steel model, showcases its contemporary style among other gadgets and technology. The watch, encased in titanium, offers enhanced durability and wear resistance, making it a premium choice for collectors and aficionados of both automotive and timepiece design.
