Plastics and rubber trade fair at Wacker K 2025 introduces a novel silicone rubber, enhancing the safety of electric vehicle traction batteries.

Wacker is set to introduce a new silicone rubber, Elastosil R 531/60, at the K 2025 International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber, held in Duesseldorf, Germany, from October 8 to 15. This innovative product is designed to insulate busbars in high-voltage batteries of electric cars, addressing the increasing voltage range in electric vehicles, which now reaches up to 900 V.

Elastosil R 531/60 offers key features such as high flexibility even at very low temperatures (down to -40 °C) and the ability to withstand significant temperature fluctuations. These properties make it well-suited to protect insulating busbars in electric car batteries under harsh thermal cycling conditions.

The new silicone rubber meets the increased electrical and thermal demands of modern high-voltage EV battery systems, which are evolving from traditional 400 V to 800 V, 1000 V, or higher voltage architectures. This enables faster charging speeds and improved safety and reliability of battery packs where busbar insulation is critical.

The main benefits of Elastosil R 531/60 for EV battery busbar insulation are:

  • Excellent thermal stability and flexibility at low temperatures (down to -40 °C)
  • Resistance to temperature fluctuations, protecting battery components
  • Capability to handle higher voltage requirements of next-generation electric car batteries

These features enhance the durability and safety of high-voltage battery assemblies in electric vehicles amid evolving performance demands.

Elastosil R 531/60 also protects batteries from vehicle body vibrations and impacts due to its extreme flexibility. In the event of a fire, the cured silicone elastomer forms an electrically insulating ceramic shell that prevents short circuits. The product is flame-resistant and reliably prevents leakage currents and energy losses.

Moreover, Elastosil R 531/60 can be processed by extrusion, making it cost-effective for insulating components. You can find Wacker's booth at Hall 6, Booth A10, during K 2025 to learn more about this groundbreaking product.

In conclusion, the introduction of Elastosil R 531/60 marks a significant step forward in improving the safety and efficiency of electric vehicles, particularly in the area of busbar insulation. The product's unique properties make it an essential component in the development of high-performance, next-generation electric car batteries.
