Baümer, a beloved figure in the international aviation scene, gained fame in the 1920s with his bright red, aerodynamically perfected aircraft. His 'Sausewind' racing plane was a significant aircraft in the German aviation scene, participating in prestigious competitions such as the German Circuit and B.Z. Prize of the Skies in May 1925. The 'Sausewind' was a creation of Baümer Aero, a company based in Hamburg. The aeronautical engineers Siegfried and Walter Günter, who were hired directly from university by Baümer, were the masterminds behind this remarkable aircraft. Baümer's life and career were marked by success and admiration. His untimely death in 1928 saw 20,000 people accompany his funeral procession, a testament to the love and respect he held within the population. Wolfgang Borgmann, with his extensive experience of 30 years as an aviation journalist and 22 years as a freelance journalist and author, has dedicated several of his 32 books in German and English on aviation history to Baümer and the 'Sausewind'. He is currently the editor of AERO INTERNATIONAL, a role he assumed in February 2022. In the podcast, Borgmann and Wolter cover the whole story of Baümer, his partner Thea Rasche, and the aircraft models of Baümer Aero. The podcast serves as a fascinating exploration of a significant chapter in aviation history. Despite extensive research, the current location of Baümer Aero, the company founded by Paul Baümer in Hamburg, remains unknown. However, the legacy of Paul Baümer and his 'Sausewind' racing plane continue to inspire and captivate aviation enthusiasts worldwide.
