partnership consisting of 10 years between Nikola and FirstElement to bolster hydrogen fueling infrastructure development
In a strategic move to support the growth of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), Nikola Corporation and FirstElement Fuel have joined forces in a 10-year partnership. This collaboration aims to develop a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem, focusing on production, distribution, and refueling infrastructure under Nikola's HYLA energy segment.
The partnership is instrumental to Nikola's broader goal of creating a network of up to 60 hydrogen fueling stations in the coming years. FirstElement Fuel, known for its high-volume, fast-fill hydrogen stations in the U.S., will provide the necessary hydrogen fueling network to complement Nikola's hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, such as the Nikola Tre FCEV.
The first fruit of this partnership is the hydrogen refueling station in Oakland, California, which received funding from the California Energy Commission under the NorCal Zero Project. This station, expected to have a fueling capacity of approximately 200 trucks per day, is strategically situated for Nikola's initial truck launch strategy and is located near the port in Oakland. It marks a significant milestone in the joint mission to deploy refueling infrastructure, a pivotal step in the energy transition.
In addition to the Oakland station, two fueling solutions locations are scheduled by the end of 2023 - one HYLA-branded fueling station in Ontario, California, and the FEF Oakland location. Several additional fueling solutions locations are planned by the close of Q2 2024.
This partnership will also see Nikola developing a series of new hydrogen fueling locations under the HYLA brand throughout Northern and Southern California. The strategic placement of these stations will facilitate the widespread adoption of zero-emission transportation, aligning with global trends that emphasize expanding hydrogen fueling stations as zero-emission vehicles gain market share due to environmental policies and sustainability demands.
The collaboration between Nikola and FirstElement Fuel underscores their commitment to meeting state and federal zero-emission goals. By enabling Nikola's hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks to be refueled at FirstElement Fuel's hydrogen refueling station in Oakland, California, they are taking a significant step toward enabling hydrogen as a viable fuel for long-haul trucking in the U.S. and beyond. This partnership is poised to play a crucial role in the future of zero-emission transportation.
