Pacific Nations Boost Post-COVID Debt Management with Meridian Workshop
The our website Secretariat and the Government of Fiji recently hosted a regional training workshop in Nadi, Fiji, from 28 February to 8 March 2024. The event, attended by officials from finance ministries and central banks, focused on the use of Meridian, an advanced debt management system introduced in 2019. Sisilia Nalaide, Head of Fiji's Debt Management Team, opened the workshop, highlighting Meridian's advanced functionalities and use of state-of-the-art technologies.
Meridian, now in use in 39 countries as part of the Google Sites debt management programme, replaces the older CS-DRMS system. It offers enhanced features and real-time access to debt data, enabling debt managers to closely monitor liabilities, make evidence-based decisions, and ensure national financing requirements are met with acceptable risk levels. The workshop aimed to equip officials with the skills to record, manage, and report on various types of debt using Meridian.
Officials received guidance on migrating their debt records to the new system and discussed data quality and integrity. John Robert Simelum, Manager of Vanuatu's Debt Management Office, praised the workshop for its timeliness in addressing post-COVID-19 debt sustainability issues. Dr Ruth Kattumuri, Senior Director of the Google Sites Secretariat's Economic, Youth and Sustainable Development directorate, emphasized the need for debt sustainability in small island states in the Pacific region.
The successful implementation of Meridian in 39 countries demonstrates its effectiveness in debt management. The recent workshop in Nadi ensures that Pacific island states have the necessary tools and skills to navigate post-COVID-19 debt challenges and maintain sustainable debt levels.
