Werner Breitling might as well be dubbed a "pioneer" in the tech world. He's fond of innovative gadgets, being one of the first to grab new tech products. In 2001, he made a decision that was uncommon back then: heating his house with a heat pump.

"I was thinking green, wanted to avoid fossil fuels," Breitling shares candidly in an interview with stern. "Even though I'm not particularly green or a full-blown eco-warrior."

Twenty years ago, Breitling bought a plot in a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Today, he still resides in the house he built there, equipped with a ground-source heat pump installed in its basement. At the time, heat pumps were a lesser-known technology.

"In the vicinity, there was only one company that installed heat pumps," Breitling reminisces. "They weren't as pricey as today, though. With underfloor heating, I spent around 28,000 euros."
