The company detects abuse at three stages: when an account is created, while messages are being sent, and when it receives negative feedback like user reports or blocks.

Recent scams targeting users to compromise accounts remain a concern, with organizations like the Digital Rights Foundation warning users about scams aimed at hijacking WhatsApp accounts by tricking them into sharing verification codes. To counter abuse, WhatsApp bans accounts involved in violations, although the exact number of accounts banned in June 2025 is not publicly disclosed.

In terms of new features, WhatsApp introduced 'Advanced Chat Privacy' in early 2025 to enhance user control over content sharing. This feature allows users to limit who can share or forward their content outside WhatsApp, preventing misuse.

Moreover, WhatsApp has introduced 'Status Ads', which work similarly to Instagram Story ads. These ads appear between updates from friends and family, with a clear "sponsored" label. Business accounts can post paid content in users' Status updates through this feature.

WhatsApp also proactively bans accounts, with approximately 19.79 lakh accounts banned without any user complaints in mid-2025. The platform received 23,596 complaints from users in India, with most of them related to ban appeals (16,069 complaints). Action was taken on 1,001 accounts after reviewing the complaints, and 756 accounts were restored following ban appeals.

In June 2025, WhatsApp banned over 98 lakh accounts in India to combat abuse and harmful activity. Other complaints were about account support, product-related issues, and safety concerns.
