OpenAI's Stargate Program Expands with $400B Investment, New Sites Across US
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have made significant strides in expanding their AI infrastructure. The Stargate program, now with nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity, is expected to receive over $400 billion in investment over the next three years. New sites are being developed across the US, with the first gigawatt of systems scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2026.
The expansion includes sites in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; an upcoming Midwest location; and potential expansions near Abilene and Lordstown, Ohio. Two more sites are being developed with SoftBank in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas. Oracle has begun delivering NVIDIA GB200 racks to the Abilene site, with early training and inference already underway.
OpenAI has secured contracts with NVIDIA and AMD for developing at least ten gigawatt systems. NVIDIA plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as each gigawatt is deployed. The first gigawatt of systems is scheduled for the second half of 2026 on NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform. More Stargate sites are expected to be announced, with the program running ahead of schedule.
