Telegram Faces Performance Issues

Telegram, the popular messaging app, has been experiencing performance issues this morning, according to various reports from users. The issues, which primarily affected users of the web and desktop apps, included sluggish message sending, slow media downloads, and call quality degradation.

The initial reports began surfacing on the Telegram subreddit and were confirmed by tech blogs such as 9to5Google and Android Authority. Ben Schoon from 9to5Google noticed issues on the native Windows client yesterday, while Joe Maring from Android Authority reported issues within the Mac client this morning.

Telegram PR has issued an updated statement, acknowledging the issues and stating that there may have been a temporary slowdown for some users in North America. The PR also indicated that some users, predominantly using the web and desktop apps, may have experienced ongoing slowdowns beyond the initial fix.

DownDetector, a website that tracks service outages, reported 274 outage claims within the past couple of hours. However, as of now, DownDetector reports have been decreasing, and according to Telegram PR, everything is working flawlessly again.

The causes of these issues are multifaceted. Server-side or network-related disruptions have contributed to sluggish messaging and media delivery on Telegram’s desktop and web platforms. Local device factors such as outdated app versions, cache buildup, and suboptimal Wi-Fi settings can also cause slow download speeds and poor app performance on mobile devices.

For mobile device users, remedies include switching to stable Wi-Fi networks instead of mobile data, updating Telegram to the latest version, and clearing Telegram’s cache in the app settings to remove temporary files that slow down operations. For desktop/web performance issues, users primarily have to wait for official bug fixes and server stability improvements.

Users should be aware of external factors like regional call restrictions that are imposed by regulatory authorities, which Telegram cannot control. These restrictions can impair voice communication features in affected regions.

Despite these issues, many users still appreciate Telegram’s file handling and group/community features. However, some users have expressed concerns about the lack of default end-to-end encryption and potential security risks.

As the situation continues to evolve, it is recommended to continue monitoring the situation for any potential further issues. No further action is required for the moment.
