Online Payments: The Enduring Trust in Interac as a Reliable Option for Canadian Transactions

In the ever-evolving world of digital payments, Interac continues to stand out as a reliable and popular choice for Canadians. This decades-old platform, integrated with modern mobile payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay, is now a staple of online checkout systems across the country.

Major Canadian banks, including the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD), Bank of Montreal (BMO), Scotiabank, and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), collaborate to facilitate Interac's debit and e-transfer services. This collaboration ensures that nearly 9 out of 10 Canadians can access Interac for their day-to-day spending.

Interac offers several advantages. It operates through an existing bank account, eliminating the need for additional accounts or multiple passwords. Transactions are fast, and fees are low, making it a convenient option for both consumers and businesses. The platform is also equipped with EMV chip technology, encryption, and two-factor authentication, making fraud less likely compared to cash or older card systems.

Interac is accepted at approximately 450,000 business locations across Canada, including retail stores, online gaming platforms, and betting operations. Government agencies like the Canada Revenue Agency also accept Interac, adding to its widespread acceptance.

While Interac has many benefits, it does have some drawbacks. For instance, there can be delays in cashouts, and its reach is limited to Canadian residents. International support is also less extensive compared to credit cards.

Despite these limitations, Interac has managed to stay relevant while newer payment services come and go. Its consistency and dependability have earned it the trust of Canadians, who continue to prefer Interac for most of their day-to-day spending.

In recent years, Interac has expanded its services. The 'Request Money' feature accounted for 89 million transactions in 2024, and Interac e-Transfer processed 1.4 billion payments that same year. Online casinos now support Interac for deposits and withdrawals, further increasing its usage.

Small and mid-sized businesses have seen an increase of more than 15 million debit transactions between April and July 2025 compared to the previous year, demonstrating the growing popularity of Interac among businesses.

Interac moved over 20 million transactions a day in 2024, a testament to its widespread use. As technology continues to evolve, Interac remains committed to providing Canadians with secure, convenient, and reliable payment solutions.
